11 July 2016 – BIRD publishes its Timeline of Nabeel Rajab’s Arrest and Detention ahead of the Human Rights Defender’s first court appearance for the charges of “insulting a statutory body” and “spreading rumours in wartime”. The charges were brought against him in 2015, but the prosecution has only pursued them now. They related to his exercise of his free expression, in particular his documentation of torture in Jau Prison and his opinions on the humanitarian cost of the Saudi-led coalition’s war in Yemen, which Bahrain is a participant in.
The timeline tracks Nabeel Rajab’s story since his arrest on 13 June 2016, on separate, new charges of “spreading false news”, in relation to televised interviews he gave.
