PAUSED_Job Advertisement: Arabic Translation Fellow

We are seeking a passionate and hard-working individual to join our tight-knit team. As an Arabic Translation Fellow at BIRD, you will make a valuable contribution to our ongoing human rights advocacy activities. You will gain experience in translating and transcribing sensitive and high level documentation from Arabic into English and vice-versa.

In addition, your translations will contribute to the development of both short and long-term projects, generating research for our campaigns and advocacy. You will be exposed to how human rights work at an international level, at the United Nations and within the European Union, and the impact of human rights policies in international relations.

Duration: 5 months, part-time (3 days a week), with the possibility to extend.

Location: The position can be carried out remotely or through hybrid working from London.

Closing Date: Applications are considered on a rolling basis, but we are looking to fill the position as soon as possible so early application is strongly encouraged.

Role:

  • Transcribe and translate audio and video recordings from Arabic into English, and vice-versa.
  • Handle highly confidential and sensitive materials with discretion and professionalism.
  •  Assist with translating documents such as judgments, legal memos, statements, parliamentary sessions and UN communications.

You may also be expected to:

  • Track and report on the human rights situation in Bahrain.
  • Track Bahrain-related news, legislation, and statements by policymakers, the UK government, and the United Nations on a daily basis.
  • Assist with advocacy campaigns by conducting research and preparing background memos and other written materials. 
  • Attend meetings and take minutes.
  • Assist with administrative duties as required.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications and Skills

We would expect a successful applicant to have the following:

Essential

  • Fluency in written and spoken Arabic and English, and able to translate between the two languages.
  • Outstanding English and Arabic writing skills.
  • To have completed an undergraduate degree in a related subject e.g. Arabic, Translation studies, Law, International Relations, Middle Eastern studies, Journalism, Criminal Justice, Politics and Policy, etc.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work both independently and in a team effectively.
  • Excellent communication & networking skills.
  • Interest in universal human rights, international relations and the Gulf region.

Desirable

  • Past experience in working for an NGO, charity or with the UK Parliament
  • Experience working with Twitter and social media campaign
  • Familiarity with Bahraini or other Gulf dialects
